Community Foundation, SBSO Cancel Aug. 29 Concert at Chris Wilson Pavilion at Potawatomi

COVID-19 Safety Concerns Drive Decision

2019 SBSO Concert

Because of the risks presented by the current COVID-19 pandemic, the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County and the South Bend Symphony Orchestra have made a joint decision to cancel the August 29 concert planned for the Community Foundation Performing Arts Series at the Chris Wilson Pavilion in Potawatomi Park.

“We’d love to be able to go forward with the concert as usual,” says Laura Moran Walton, director of public relations and communication for the Community Foundation and coordinator of the annual six-event series, “but we’re concerned about the safety of the Symphony’s musicians and that of our audience members. We always draw a big crowd for this particular concert, and sadly, this simply isn’t a good time for big crowds.”

The annual event regularly brings more than 1,000 people to South Bend’s Potawatomi Park.

“The Community Foundation Performing Arts Series is a hallmark of summers in St. Joseph County, and it will be sorely missed this year,” laments the Symphony’s Executive Director Justus Zimmerman. “As case counts spiked in the county, we weren’t satisfied that we could provide a safe experience. We serve the people of this community first—there was no other responsible decision to be made.”

The Community Foundation plans to return to presenting its full series in the summer of 2021, including a performance by the South Bend Symphony Orchestra with a play-along component for community musicians. The organization also hopes to partner with WVPE 88.1-FM next year to simulcast the concert, as had been planned for this year.

The Community Foundation Performing Arts Series is sponsored by the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County’s ArtsEverywhere Fund, the Marjorie H. Wilson Charitable Trust Fund, and the Indiana Arts Commission. South Bend Venues, Parks and Arts is a key partner.
